BOAT HISTORY

Phoenix is a Class40 offshore racing yacht that was designed specifically for solo and double-handed oceanic racing. Launched in 2008 she is hull number 44 within Class40.

12.18m long, 5m wide with a keel that is 3.1m deep and weighing approximately 5500kg she is built using a fibreglass/foam sandwich technique which is both light and extremely strong.

A water ballast system permits up to 750kg of seawater to be pumped into either side of the boat in order to balance her against the pressure of the wind and sail faster.

The ergonomics both above and below decks are designed to make solo ocean racing as comfortable and efficient as possible.

To comply with the safety rules of the Global Solo Challenge, additional watertight bulkheads have been added inside the boat and with a positive buoyancy totalling well over 5000kg she is effectively unsinkable.

In preparation for the event, the Phoenix Team are replacing all the sails, much of the rigging and rope, removing and inspecting the keel and rudders and servicing every system onboard.

Heavily optimised by her previous race team, she is fast and proven.

The boat has a fine pedigree and has in fact already won two double-handed round the world races with stopovers: the 2008-09 Global Ocean Race as “Beluga Racer” and the 2022-23 Globe40 Race as “Sec Hayai”.
